Compound number 17: Star of the Magi (Star of Venus)
Chaldean compound · reduces to 8 · Favourable
Cheiro's reading of 17
Cheiro sees 17 as a deeply spiritual number of peace and love, describing someone who rises above life's hardships and whose name endures. He calls it fortunate for future events unless combined with 4s and 8s.
How a name reaches 17
In the Chaldean system every letter of the name is added into one total. When that total is 17, Cheiro reads 17 first and then the single digit it reduces to: 1+7 = 8. Read number 8 for the single-digit meaning.
Cheiro used compound numbers mainly to judge names and dates. These readings describe his tradition's view; they are not predictions.
Is 17 a lucky number?
Cheiro counts 17 among the favourable compound numbers.
Names that add up to 17
Some common first names whose letters add to 17 in the Chaldean system: Harish, Nikhil, Rahul, Rajesh, Shreya, Karthik, Jessica, Marco. For example, Harish: 5 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 5 = 17. A full name adds the first name, any middle names and the surname together.
17 in dates
For dates from 1940 to 2019, adding every digit gives totals from 4 (1 January 2000) to 48 (29 September 1999). Of all dates from 1940 to 2019, 2.0% add up to exactly 17. That whole-date total reduces to the Bhagyank, here 8.
As a day of the month, the 17th gives Mulank 8. Born on the 17th.
Other compounds that reduce to 8
26, 35, 44. Each has its own reading, though they share the single digit 8.
What the single digit 8 adds
Eight is associated with power, money and organisation. It is read as capable and strategic; the shadow side is overwork or measuring life by status. In Cheiro's method the compound gives the colour and the single digit gives the underlying nature; both are read together.
How one letter changes 17
Adding a letter raises a Chaldean total by that letter's value, from 1 to 8 (no letter is worth 9). This is why a doubled letter or an extra vowel can move a name to a different compound:
